Australian Sayings and Terms

My friends and I got together and put together a list of all the Australian sayings and terms that we have heard while being here. Some of them I have used in my blog before, but here is the final list we made. Enjoy!

Skull means to chug something, such as a beer.
“SKULL! SKULL! SKULL!
 
Pissed = Drunk 
I learned this when my roommate Clair said that she was pissed last night but she had a great time out. I was confused as to why she was mad but still had a good time. Isn't that an oxymoron?! Not in Australia!

Uni = College/University
A college is a residential community, kind of like a sorority or fraternity. To get into a college here is based on grades and extracurricular activities, and there is a principal and everything. You still go to Sydney Uni, but live in the colleges.

Mackers = McDonalds
There is no such thing as a dollar menu here. The cheapest thing is about $5 for a hamburger.

Budgie Smuggler = Men’s Speedo
A Budgie is a small parakeet native to Australia. Makes sense why they use that name!

Keen= Down 
For example, I am keen for going to the beach.

Morning Tea= Snack in the morning
They have morning and afternoon tea, in which you usually have a snack and drink a cup of tea or coffee.

Milo= Hot Chocolate
It is not regular hot chocolate, because it does not have all of the added sugar. It is just pure chocolate mix that is not as strong.

Reckon= Think
Example: What do you reckon?

Rice Bubbles= Rice Krispies (the cereal). Even the box says Rice Bubbles on it.

Swimmers = Bathing Suit

Have a go! = Give it a try

Good on ya= Good for you, Good job!

How you going? = How are you doing?

Brekky= Breakfast
Arvo= Lunch

Bottle shop (Bottle-O) = Liquor store

Dugong = Manatee

Nappy= A babies diaper

Heap= A lot

Lolli Shop= Candy Shop
Lollies= Candies, not just lollipops.

Cheers= Can be used a number of ways, from a salutation to expressing thanks or good will.

Period at the end of sentence= Full Stop
Exclamation Point= Exclamation Mark
Comma= Pause

Stacking it= Falling on the ground

Aboriginal= Native Australian

Dodgy= Sketchy

Doona= Comforter / Blanket

Marks= Grades/Points

Maths= Math/Mathematics

Rubber= Eraser

Bogan= Redneck/Trailer trash

Lounge= Couch

Mate= Friend

G'day= Hello

Photo= Picture

Boot= Trunk of a Car

To Ring Someone= To call someone

Push Bike= Bicycle

Petrol= Gas

Peg= Clothespin

Queue= Line

Buggie= Golf Cart

Rubbish= Trash

Durry= Cigarette

Sweet as= Cool
Usually said by itself at the end of a sentence.

Adidas = They say it as ad-did-ass
 
Fanny= A woman’s front side

“Pin or sign?”= This their way of asking, “debit or credit?”

Taking the piss= To tease, joke

Bloody Oath= Truth

Stubbie holder= Beer Holder

Sunnies= Sun Glasses

Boardies= Board Shorts

Lounge= Couch

Eski= Cooler

Serviet= Napkin

Torch= Flashlight

Beached= Lazy
